TOWN OF CAGSAUA
THIS SITE WAS FORMERLY OCCUPIED BY THE TOWN OF CAGSAUA WHICH WAS DESTROYED BY THE ERUPTION OF MAYON VOLCANO FEBRUARY 1, 1814. TOWN WAS BURIED UNDER ROCKS, LAVA AND VOLCANIC ASH. ABOUT 1,200 PERSONS PERISHED. ON JULY 16, 1814. THE AUTHORITIES OF CAGSAUA ASSEMBLED AT LIGAO AND DECIDED TO TRANSFER THE TOWN TO DARAGA. THE FIRST CENTENARY OF THIS ERUPTION WAS SOLEMNLY COMMEMORATED BY THE INHABITANTS OF THE BICOL REGION, FEBRUARY 1, 1914 WITH A PILGRIMAGE TO CAGSAUA. A HIGH MASS WAS CELEBRATED OVER THE RUINS OF THE CHURCH IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES.
