MEMORARE
THIS HISTORICAL MARKER IS DEDICATED TO ALL THE SPANISH AND FILIPINO SAILORS WHO DIED AND PERISHED IN ACTION DURING THE NAVAL BATTLE OF THE COASTLINE OF CAVITE IN MANILA BAY ON MAY 1, 1898, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO FOUGHT TO THE END UNDER ADMIRAL PATRIRIO MONTOJO AND, THOUGH DEFEATED, WON THE ADMIRATION OF THE SPANIARDS AND ADVERSARIES FOR THEIR HEROIC STAND AGAINST THE SUPERIOR AMERICAN NAVAL FORCE.
UNVEILED ON THE OCCASION OF THE CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION OF PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE BY HIS EXCELLENCY FIDEL VALDEZ RAMOS PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES AND HIS MAJESTY KING JUAN CARLOS OF SPAIN, THIS 12 FEBRUARY 1998, TO FOSTER THE FRIENDSHIP AND CLOSE COOPERATION BETWEEN SPAIN AND THE REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES.
