HOSPITAL DE SAN LAZARO
THIS IS THE SITE OF THE FORMER HOSPITAL DE SAN LAZARO FOUNDED BY THE FRANCISCANS IN 1586. IN 1625 THE PATRONATO REAL (CROWN) ASSUMED THE TEMPORAL ADMINISTRATION OF THE HOSPITAL, WHILE THE FRANCISCANS RETAINED THE SPIRITUAL MINISTRATION. A TYPHOON DESTROYED THE HOSPITAL IN 1663 AND A BUILDING OF LIGHT MATERIALS WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1664 WHICH WAS TURNED OVER TO THE BISHOP OF NUEVA CACERES IN 1691. BISHOP FRANCISCO C. GAINZA, O.P. ERECTED IN 1873 A NEW AND STRONGER HOSPITAL, BUT THIS WAS DESTROYED BY THE EARTHQUAKE OF APRIL 19, 1907.
