ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATORY OF JOSEPH LE PAUTE D’AGELET
ON FEBRUARY 27, 1787, THE FRENCH SHIPS LA BOUSSOLE AND L’ASTROLABE DISPATCHED ON A SCIENTIFIC MISSION ANCHORED AT CAVITE. A TEMPORARY OBSERVATORY WAS SET UP IN THE GARDEN OF THE RESIDENCE OF THE CAVITE COMMANDANT WHERE THE ASTRONOMER, JOSEPH LE PAUTE D’AGELET, DETERMINED THE LATITUDE OF CAVITE WITH AQUADRANT OF THREE FEET RADIUS AND THE LONGTITUDE OF CAVITE BY MEANS OF LUNAR DISTANCES AND RATE OF CHRONOMETERS. THE SHIPS WERE LATER LOST IN THE SOUTH PACIFIC WITH ALL HANDS ON BOARD.
