CANNON AT THE SOUTH SIDE,
NATIONAL LIBRARY – LEGISLATIVE BUILDING
THIS CANNON CAST AT TRUBIA, SPAIN, IN 1859 WAS PART OF THE ARMAMENT OF THE SPANISH ARSENAL AT CAVITE IN 1898. AFTER DEWEY’S FORCES OCCUPIED THE ARSENAL, MAJOR LADISLAO JOSE OF THE PHILIPPINE REVOLUTIONARY FORCES PROCURED AND USED IT AT MAYTUBIG TO BOM-BARD THE SPANIARDS’ MUNITION DEPOT AT FORT SAN ANTONIO ABAD DEFENDED BY A GARRISON UNDER THE COMMAND OF GENERAL ARIZMENDI.AFTER THE CAPTURE OF MANILA, GENERAL MARIANO NORIEL OF THE PHILIPPINE REVOLUTIONARY FORCES USED IT AT THE BATTLE OF ZA-POTE WHERE IT WAS CAPTURED AND BROKEN BY THE AMERICANS. IN 1936, IT WAS BROUGHT TO THE NATIONAL LIBRARY FOR PRESERVATION. IN 1938, THE PHILIPPINES HISTORICAL COMMITTEE MOUNTED IT HERE.
